आपल्याकडे परदेशातील उच्च शिक्षणाबाबत असलेली जागरूकता आता मोठय़ा प्रमाणात वाढू लागली आहे. गेल्या काही वर्षांत अनेक विद्यार्थी पदवी शिक्षण घेतानाच परदेशात पदव्युत्तर शिक्षण घेण्यासाठी कंबर कसतात. परदेशी विद्यापीठातील प्रवेशासाठी वेगवेगळ्या प्रवेशपरीक्षांच्या मांडवाखालून जावे लागते. उच्च शिक्षणासाठी परदेशी जाऊ इच्छिणाऱ्या विद्यार्थ्यांना प्रवेशासाठी द्याव्या 
लागणाऱ्या जीआरई, जीमॅट, सॅट, टोफेल किंवा आयईएलटीएस यांसारख्या प्रवेश परीक्षांची  तोंडओळख.. 
जीआरई  (GRE- Graduate Records Exam)
जीआरई ही अमेरिकेतील विद्यापीठांमध्ये (ग्रॅज्युएट स्कूल्समध्ये) पदव्युत्तर व पीएच.डीच्या अभ्यासक्रमांना प्रवेश घेण्यासाठी प्रमाणित केली गेलेली परीक्षा आहे. अमेरिकेतील 'एज्युकेशनल टेिस्टग सíव्हस' या संस्थेतर्फे 
ही परीक्षा घेतली जाते. या परीक्षेचे वैशिष्टय़ म्हणजे अमेरिकेमध्ये तसेच काही इतर देशांमध्येही  व्यवस्थापनाव्यतिरिक्त सर्व विद्याशाखांमधील प्रत्येक विषयाच्या पदव्युत्तर व पीएच.डी.च्या अभ्यासक्रमांच्या प्रवेशासाठी ही एकच परीक्षा द्यावी लागते. या परीक्षेच्या माध्यमातून  परीक्षार्थीचे विश्लेषणात्मक कौशल्य, इंग्रजीवरील प्रभुत्व व संख्यात्मक क्षमता जाणून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न केला जातो. ही परीक्षा संगणकाच्या साहाय्याने देता येते. मात्र, ज्या ठिकाणी संगणक उपलब्ध नाहीत अशा ठिकाणी ती लिखित स्वरूपातदेखील देता येते. या परीक्षेत तीन प्रमुख घटक आहेत- 
* इंग्रजीचे ज्ञान (Verbal Reasoning) - या विभागात परीक्षार्थीचे  इंग्रजी भाषेचे ज्ञान अजमावले जाते.  हा विभाग अजून दोन उपविभागांमध्ये विभागला गेला आहे. या प्रत्येक उपविभागात २० प्रश्न असतात आणि ते सोडवण्यासाठी अध्र्या तासाचा अवधी असतो. शब्द व वाक्यांमधील संबंध, विविध शब्दांमधील सहसंबंध अशा स्वरूपाचे प्रश्न असतात. 'जीआरई'ची गुणांकन पद्धत खूप वेगळी आहे. या विभागासाठी किमान गुण १३० तर कमाल १७० गुण असतात. त्या दरम्यान, एकेका गुणाची वाढ 
होऊ शकते. 
* गणिती क्षमता (Quantitative Reasoning)- या विभागात परीक्षार्थीच्या संख्यात्मक क्षमता म्हणजे गणित व भूमितीमधील मूलभूत कौशल्ये जाणून घेतली जातात. हा विभागही दोन उपविभागांमध्ये विभागला गेला आहे. इथेही प्रत्येक उपविभागात २० प्रश्न असतात. त्यासाठी ३५ मिनिटे वेळ दिलेला असतो. या विभागाचे गुणांकनही १३०-१७० च्या टप्प्यात केले जाते.
* विश्लेषणात्मक लेखन (Analytical Writing) - या विभागात परीक्षार्थीचे  विश्लेषणात्मक कौशल्य तपासले जाते. या विभागात फक्त दोन प्रश्न दिलेले असतात. प्रत्येक प्रश्नासाठी अध्र्या तासाचा वेळ असतो. या विभागाचे गुणांकन ०-६ च्या टप्प्यात केले जाते. त्यामध्ये अध्र्या गुणाची वाढ होऊ शकते.
या परीक्षेचा कालावधी एकूण पावणेचार तासांचा असतो. 'जीआरई'चे गुणांकन एकूण पाच वर्षांसाठी वैध असते. 'जीआरई' परीक्षेचे एकूण शुल्क १९५ अमेरिकी डॉलर आहे. परीक्षार्थी संगणकावरील आधारित 'जीआरई' परीक्षा एका वर्षांत कितीही वेळा देऊ शकतो. मात्र सलग दोन परीक्षांमध्ये किमान २१ दिवसांचे अंतर असावे लागते. लिखित 'जीआरई' परीक्षा मात्र वर्षभरातून फक्त तीन वेळा तीसुद्धा ऑक्टोबर, नोव्हेंबर आणि फेब्रुवारी याच महिन्यांत देता येते. परीक्षेचा निकाल परीक्षेनंतर लगेचच समोर दिसतो. अधिकृतरीत्या मात्र तो १५ ते २० दिवसांत परीक्षार्थीने दिलेल्या पत्त्यावर पाठवला जातो. त्यानंतर 'जीआरई'चे गुण थेट विद्यापीठाला न कळवता ETS  (Educational Testing Service) मार्फत
कळवावे लागतात.

GRE Exam features

• Verbal Reasoning — Measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences and recognize relationships among words and concepts.
• Quantitative Reasoning — Measures problem-solving ability, focusing on basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.
• Analytical Writing — Measures critical thinking and analytical writing skills, specifically your ability to articulate and support complex ideas clearly and effectively.

Who Takes It?

Prospective graduate and business school applicants from all around the world who are interested in pursuing a master's, MBA, specialized master's in business or doctoral degree take the GRE revised General Test. Applicants come from varying educational and cultural backgrounds and the GRE revised General Test provides schools with a common measure for comparing candidates' qualifications.

GRE scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement your undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study.

When and Where Do People Take It?

The GRE revised General Test is available at about 700 test centers in more than 160 countries. In most regions of the world, the computer-based test is available on a continuous basis throughout the year. In Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, the computer-based test is available one to three times per month. In areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available, the test is administered in a paper-based format up to three times a year in October, November and February.
