टोफेल TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
अमेरिकेतील विद्यापीठांमध्ये प्रवेश घेण्यासाठी 'जीआरई' किंवा 'जीमॅट'सारखीच द्यावी लागणारी 'टोफेल' ही इंग्रजीची परीक्षा आहे. ज्या विद्यार्थ्यांची मातृभाषा इंग्रजी नाही अशा विद्यार्थ्यांना 'टोफेल' ही परीक्षा उत्तम गुणांसह उत्तीर्ण होणे आवश्यक आहे. 'जीआरई' व 'सॅट'सारखी 'टोफेल' ही परीक्षासुद्धा अमेरिकेतील 'एज्युकेशनल टेिस्टग सíव्हस' या संस्थेकडून घेतली जाते. 'टोफेल' ही इंटरनेट आधारित परीक्षा (IBT-internet Based test) आहे, म्हणून बऱ्याचदा 'टोफेल' परीक्षेचा उल्लेख TOEFL-iBT असाही केला जातो. मात्र, अजूनही ही परीक्षा लिखित स्वरूपातदेखील घेतली जाते. 
'टोफेल' ही इंग्रजीची परीक्षा असल्याने तुलनेने 'जीआरई' व 'जीमॅट'पेक्षा सोपी असते. 'टोफेल' परीक्षेत एकूण चार विभाग आहेत. प्रत्येक विभागास ३० गुण आहेत. म्हणजेच एकूण 'टोफेल' ही 
१२० गुणांची परीक्षा असते. 
* वाचन - या विभागात चार ते सहा उतारे दिलेले असतात आणि त्यावर १२-१४ विचारलेले प्रश्न असतात. हे उतारे शैक्षणिक विषयांवर आधारित असतात. साधारणपणे कारण-परिणाम किंवा तुलनात्मक विरोधाभास याबाबत समज असल्यास हे उतारे सहजपणे परीक्षार्थी सोडवू शकतो. या विभागासाठी एकूण वेळ ६०-१०० मिनिटांचा असतो. त्याचे गुणांकन ०-३० या टप्प्यात केले जाते.
* श्राव्य चाचणी (Listening)- या विभागामध्ये एकूण सहा ते नऊ उतारे असतात, ज्यात प्रत्येकी पाच ते सहा प्रश्न असतात. या विभागासाठी एक ते दीड तास एवढा वेळ दिलेला असतो. वरील दोन्ही विभागानंतर मात्र १० मिनिटांचा अनिवार्य विराम असतो. 
* वक्तृत्व - या विभागामध्ये एकूण सहा प्रश्न असतात आणि परीक्षार्थीला प्रत्येक प्रश्नाचे उत्तर देताना अर्थातच इंग्रजी बोलण्याची सवय असणे अत्यावश्यक आहे. या सहा प्रश्नांची उत्तरे सांगण्यासाठी २० मिनिटांचा 
वेळ असतो.
* लेखन- या विभागामध्ये एकूण दोन प्रश्न असतात. एका प्रश्नामध्ये दिलेल्या विषयावर स्वत:ची मते व्यक्त करणारे निबंधलेखन करायचे असते आणि दुसऱ्या प्रश्नामध्ये एक संवाद ऐकून त्यावर आधारित लेखन करणे आवश्यक आहे. या विभागासाठी ५० मिनिटांचा अवधी असतो. या विभागाचेही गुणांकन ०-३० या टप्प्यात केले जाते.
'टोफेल' परीक्षेचा एकूण कालावधी हा सव्वातीन ते सव्वाचार तासांचा असतो. या परीक्षेचे गुणांकन दोन वर्षांसाठी वैध असते. परीक्षार्थी एका वर्षांत 'टोफेल- आयबीटी' ही परीक्षा कितीही वेळा देऊ शकतो, मात्र दोन परीक्षांमध्ये किमान १२ दिवसांचे अंतर असणे गरजेचे आहे. 
या परीक्षेचे एकूण शुल्क १६० ते २५० अमेरिकी डॉलर्सच्या दरम्यान आहे. जगभरातील १६५ देशांमध्ये या परीक्षेची साडेचार हजारांहून अधिक परीक्षा 
केंद्रे आहेत.

Test Of English A Foreign Language is a Standardized test that evaluates the English Proficiency of people whose native language is not English. Nearly 2400 education institutes in the United States and Canada require TOEFL® scores from each applicant. The test is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language of Instruction. The TOEFL tests the ability to understand North American English.

TOEFL test is administered as a computer based test in India.

The test is designed in such a way that it would be unlike any other test you would have taken at school or college. First, the test has no question paper or answer sheets, nor does it have the same set of questions for all the examinees. Further, it does not give you the option of not answering a question (unless, of course, you run out of time at the end). All this because the TOEFL test is now an entirely Computer based test - the keyboard and mouse do the work of a pen or pencil. The test is scored out of 300, and most scores fall in the range of 200-250.

The TOEFL test is only to test your English proficiency. A high score alone does not translate into an admission offer from a great school. But the test is mandatory and cannot be overlooked.

Who administers the TOEFL test?

The TOEFL test is developed and administered by the US-based "Educational Testing Service" (ETS). This implies that ETS sets the questions, conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report. For the conduct of the test, ETS has appointed Testing Agencies in various countries, which act as franchisee for ETS. In India, this agency is the "Prometric Testing Services Pvt Ltd" which administers the test at 9 centres in the country:Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Trivandrum.

When is the TOEFL test held?

Computer based TOEFL test is held all-round-the-year. Unlike other exams, you can choose your own date and time for taking the TOEFL test! The test is administered in the above cities five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. September to December is the high season for TOEFL test, so in case you intend to take the test during this period, you need to register very early (say 90 days in advance) to get a date of your choice. Otherwise, registering at least three days in advance is mandatory. The test lasts roughly four hours.

Anyone and everyone is eligible for taking the TOEFL test - there are no restrictions based on age or qualifications. The test scores are valid for two years, i.e., most universities accept scores up to two years old.

Fees are subject to change without notice. In India, this fee is US $130, payable at the time of registration. You cannot pay in Indian Rupees.  

The fees has to be paid through a US Dollar denominated draft, made out in favour of "ETS - TOEFL" payable in the U.S. Such a draft is usually available with the Main Branches of most banks (which have a foreign exchange counter) in most of the big cities for a nominal charge (around Rs. 200).

Alternately, the payment can also be made through a credit card which has global acceptance. The credit card need not necessarily be yours - you can get your father to sign for you!

Important: The name on the registration form should be exactly the same as in your passport or you may not be allowed to test. It is advisable to attach the photocopy of the Passport with the application form to avoid any faulty registration.

Since, a large number of students register for TOEFL test across India, the TOEFL test dates 2016 have been, currently, given for 35 cities across the country. Candidates can register for test  once the TOEFL test dates are declared by ETS. Candidates should select the test dates in accordance to the application deadline of the universities they are applying to.

TOEFL Test 2016 is conducted to evaluate English language proficiency of a candidate. The test is taken by people whose native language is not English. It is administered by Educational Testing Service – a US based non-profit organization which also announces the TOEFL test dates. There are more than 9,000 TOEFL participating institutes across 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U K and the United States.
